Jilly-Bean, Hill-Bop and I decided to revisit a scary time from our childhoods and rewatch the movie "The Day After." Not "The Day After Tomorrow..." Because that's too much time to prepare to be truly frightening.

For those who don't know what this movie is, apparently these people exist, most of them born after 1980...the Day After was a lovely t.v. miniseries (2 hours) that is supposed to show what would happen if there were a M.A.D (Mutual Assured Destruction) between U.S. and Russia. Yes, youngens, they used to be the bad guys...before they got really poor and only dressed in grays and drank a lot of Vodka.

Anyway, the movie wasn't AS freaky as I remembered it. There were a lot of big name actors such as Jason Robarts and Steve Guttenburg (well, Steve WAS sort of big in the 80s...Police Academy and No. 5 is ALIVE, Hello!) I think I had a crush on Steve Guttenburg when I was a wee lad. There was something about short men with hairy chests, and those 80s style gym shorts. Oh, how I digress. Despite the big names, the acting was craptastic, the writing came across like a informational video, and the make-up was rather make-uppy.

I think my favorite crappy scene is right after the bombs have hit U.S, which the actual bombing part was a bit freaky...just the idea of it, and there is this family that have holed themselves up in the basement. Dirt on the windows will keep the Radiation out, don't you know. Anyway, the daughter says, "How long we gots to stay in here Pappa?"

"I'm not sure...I don't know much about radiation."

"What's radiation?"

And scene.

Later on it is explained by good 'ol Guttenburg...

"You can't see it, you can't smell it, and you can't taste it, but it's all around gettin' down into your cells!"

The movie did get me thinking, though just how dumb we are to even have concepts such as Mutual Assured Destruction. Seriously, what the fuck? As long as I live as a human being, I will never figure us out.
